While Greg has a few more days off from school, we are continuing to be in holiday-mode even though our Maine holiday is officially over :-( After decompressing, doing laundry and groceries and other boring things yesterday, we headed out on another Fennell adventure today. We decided to check out the beach and town of Newburyport, having heard good things. So once again we headed to the North Shore of the GBA (we have yet to develop the nerves of steel required to brave Cape Cod bound traffic).
We got an early start and were on the beach well before 10 am. The drive took us under an hour and we found ourselves on a quintessential New England beach, complete with dunes, sea grass and clapboard houses. We didn't stop in Newburyport, being limited on time due to Kai's nap schedule, but we drove through and will definitely go back. It has the feel of more of a European or British town than an American one.
The beach reminded us a little of Hawaii's north shore beaches (really, I'm serious). The sand was a little on the coarse side and the beach sloped steeply into the ocean and was pounded by a pretty good shore break. So it wasn't an ideal beach for our little beach bum and we had to keep a firm hand on him so as not to see him swept out to sea by the retreating waves. Kai enjoyed playing with his shovels and buckets, dragging his parents into the frigid water (so not like Hawaii in this respect!), and screeching with laughter as his dad demonstrated his long jump skills into the surf for his entertainment. (I think Greg still has some Olympic fantasies).
We made it home in time for Kai to get in his required 3+ hours of daily shut eye (toddlers are such great nappers!), and today was my turn to hit the trails while he slept. I think Greg deserves the Super Dad award of the day. In addition to his toddler entertaining long jumping antics and staying home while I mountain biked, he also made dinner and made use of those yummy blueberries we picked last week and whipped up a blueberry crisp! YUMMY!!!!!!
