This photo is looking back at the same mountain ridge from the North. It is quite a coffin-nailing finisher to a long, hilly ride, grinding uphill with a 15% grade. We live on the backside of it so pretty much have to ride over it on our way home, no matter what (unless there is time for a lengthy detour). I haven't gotten up the nerve to try a group ride yet b/c as you can see, there won't be any limping home or I might not make it home.
Some photos from the flatter parts of my ride up the coast.
Like Hawaii, San Diego is quite trafficky and early morning rides are going to be the norm. But unlike Hawaii, there are lots of bike lanes and drivers (so far) have been quite courteous. Also unlike Hawaii (which is also very mountainous) you just can't avoid the hills in SD. They are everywhere. In Hawaii you could pretty much ride flat unless you cut across the island or chose to "ride ridges."Needless to say my average ride speeds have gone way down. But hey, who's looking at that when you have ocean to ogle.
Learning to love hills on the run too. Here are some pretty awesome shots from my morning trail run through the Torrey Pines trail network.
