A Tale of Two Music Lions

On Christmas Eve a very special visitor arrived, Music Lion's English cousin, via the North Pole.
For those not familiar, Music Lion is a very special friend of Kai's. They hang out together all the time and are often up to no good. Kai is very knowledgeable about music lion. It has a gender: female (which makes perfect sense b/c when Kai looked between Music Lion's legs to see, well....she was a girl). But Music Lions do pee through their tails, in case you were wondering. Just ask Kai, he'll show you. They're pretty close. If anything is bothering Kai, it is usually bothering Music Lion too.

When we asked Kai what he wanted to ask Santa to bring him for Christmas his answer was "a new Music Lion." Anything else? "Nope, just a new Music Lion." You see Kai's Music Lion is also known as "Non Music Lion" b/c she hasn't played music for a very long time.

Grandma Barbie heard about this request and saw to it that Santa got a little help. You see Music Lions only exist now in the wilds of the UK, where they are not yet discontinued. So New Music Lion had a visit to Auntie Rosemarie's house in the UK, then onto Canada before arriving in San Diego, fresh off Santa's sleigh.

We all waited with baited breath for Kai's reaction, would he accept the nervous newcomer?
Yup, with open arms :-)
New Music Lion, we've been told, is a boy, unlike his predecessor. But he also pees through his tail, because that is what Music Lions do. Kai has also been commenting on his very bright orange coloring and his thickly stuffed arms, qualities no longer apparent in Old Music Lion (as he is now known), or Music Lion One. Kai has really gotten a kick out of having Two Music Lions. He spent a fair bit of Christmas day looking at his buddies and saying to himself in a little bit of disbelief "Two Music Lions..."
When Teia saw New Music Lion she asked quizzically "What is on his head?" You see, Teia is too young to remember the days when Old Music Lion still wore a crown.

Kai and Teia went to town on the key to the music box that sticks out of ML's bum, pretty quickly insuring that New Music Lion didn't play music anymore either. But no one seems to mind. I guess its not about the music after all.

Sibling Love

At Kindergarten Kai decorates a folder each month to keep his worksheets in. At the end of the month he gets to bring it home. During the fall his folders were decorated with trolleys. He decided to start the New Year off with a different theme: Teia

And its not a Teia lolly pop; she is going pee.

Will get some Christmas stories and photos posted soon!

First Santa Encounter

Teia and Kai have never been to visit a mall Santa. I know most families have the quaint pic of the kids on Santa's knee. We have alot of pics. But not that one. Mostly it is my deep seated aversion to malls after the 1st of December. And my deep seated aversion to crowds and standing in lines. Because of my aversions, my kids are missing out. But I don't worry about it too much. I think while they may be missing out on the mall Santa, they're still pretty happy kiddos and at this point, they don't really know what they're missing.

Still when Santa showed up at Greg's work party last week, I was curious to see their reaction. I have heard about screams of terror and refusals to go near the mall Santa from some of my friends' little ones, while others perch happily on his knee recounting their Christmas list.

Teia was ripping it up on the dance floor when Santa arrived, while Kai was taking care of business in the lou (so he missed the jingle bell announced arrival). I wish I had known it was about to happen so I could have whipped out the video cam b/c the emotions that danced across Teia's little face were unforgettable. First surprise turning to shock turning to "don't you dare make me go up there!"

Even the lure of a present couldn't persuade her, although after Mama stood in and rec'd Teia's gift on her behalf, she wouldn't let go of it. Kai to our surprise willingly, albeit guardedly, walked up to Santa. "Would you like to sit on Santa's knee?" the ol' Christmassy fella asked. "No" was Kai's definitive yet calm response. Then he ever so tentatively accepted his present, not really sure about the whole thing.
So here it is, the first pic of a Fennell kidlet with the guy in the red suit.

Trimmin' the Breakfast Tree

This year was quite possibly our best tree trimmin' yet with the kidlets. They were both so into it. The anticipation was building with the days leading up to our tree-getting-outing. One morning upon waking Kai ominously asked "Is it here yet?" Meaning - "the tree." And Teia, well she is about anything Christmas. After just about anything we do she asks "and now its Christmas?" This pretty much started the day after Hallowe'en.

It seems they both have their own distinctive decorating style too. Kai was contemplative about his placements, beginning at the back of the tree and then settling on the front lower left (I was going to say corner but fir trees don't really have corners now do they). He particularly enjoyed checking out ornaments he made in years past. Teia on the other hand was rather speedy, filling up the front lower right (corner?) quickly and demanding ornaments as fast as we could unpack them.

You can see the bottom of the tree is rather "busy." Greg and I did some rearranging after the pint size decorators were asleep.

It really was fun. Drinking egg nog and watching the kids decorate. It wasn't even sunny for a change so felt mildly Christmassy. And Kai decided he really enjoyed hanging out under the tree. Don't think I've seen him stay so still for so long, maybe ever!
Although Teia talks all day long and has something to say about pretty much anything, she still has some remaining "baby-isms" when she talks. She says things like "Please I can?" and "Them are going to eat something now." Her pronunciation of Christmas is getting better. A month ago I couldn't always understand her. But sometimes it does still sound like "breakfast." At least Kai thinks so. He couldn't stop laughing about our "Breakfast Tree."

Cuteness

Snapped this photo a few weeks ago while the kidlets were reading their bedtime books with Daddy.

It reminded me of this photo:
Which it turns out, was taken almost exactly two years ago. Teia had just turned 1 and Kai was about 3 and a half. Hard to believe its possible, but they just keep getting cuter :-)

US Thanksgiving Week

I have really grown to love US Thanksgiving. Much the same as Canadian Thanksgiving except in late November instead of early October (funny, I often find myself explaining this the other way around...) There are some key differences though: the shopping, a football game and typically Christmas trees or at least decorations the very next day. Its not really a stand alone holiday in the US, but more of a "launcher." I feel a little bit badly for US Thanksgiving standing in the shadows of Black Friday and Christmas but it is kind of nice to have an official "here we go...." for the holiday season. Kind of like a prologue in a bike race. Kind of. Without the performance enhancing drugs. Although there is the turkey hangover. So maybe that counts.

I do like the 4 day weekend (although we missed out on that one this year, thanks submarine mechanics or engineers or whoever messed up this time - definitely not the PNS Detachment Repair Peoples). In San Diego schools close down for an entire week which is nice b/c it means no rushing the kidlets out of the door every morning. Nice to have a week off from that.

We kept pretty busy during our Thanksgiving holiday week with outings and visitors. Our Thanksgiving Day pre-turkey hike turned into a family run. Both kids took off at the start and didn't slow down for about 20 minutes. Well, Teia did after she got a stitch; but Kai kept right on truckin'. In fact, Daddy and Kai got so far ahead of us that I was rec'ing texts making sure we hadn't been consumed by a cougar. Yes, even just outside of San Diego there are cougar warnings.

Drink break in the sunshine.

Brought along the backpack we thought the kids had grown out of. Not so. Teia LOVED it as you can see she is snuggled up with Daddy for a short break.

Always adventurous!

And here she is looking for snakes which are probably much more likely on this trail than a cougar sighting. Having written that though, I just saw an OWL in my backyard! Who da thought? I don't think I've ever seen one in the wilderness and I look outside my window and there is a little brown owl! Wow.

We had a much anticipated visit from some great friends. The kids loved having visitors, especially one their own size. We went to Seaworld:

Decorated a gingerbread village:
Enjoyed dinner with "fizzy juice" (a holiday requirement):
And had a sleep over with our friends. Both kids were very excited. When Teia woke up she immediately wanted to go and find our friends to say good morning.

We also took in a very cheesy and overpriced drive-thru Christmas light show on Thanksgiving Evening. But you know what? The kids loved it.

Teia and I enjoyed a great beach day with our friends and learned how to build a "drip castle."

No Christmas tree up here yet and no Black Friday shopping but we did enjoy our second turkey and pumpkin pie meal of 2012. I think we will put on the pressure for Daddy to get those outside lights up though...time to get festive! And begin the preparations and anticipations for our next group of holiday visitors!!!

Happy F$*#*@)! Halloween!

Happy Halloween!   (we'll get to the middle term in short order)

Sorry its been awhile.  Louise has certainly been the journeyman on this blog voyage, plugging away at inciteful & funny excerpts from our busy San Diego lives.   Frankly, I couldn't do any better!   She does a way better job of capturing Teia's 3-year lilt & phraseology than this die-cast engineer  (verbal cues aren't my strong point; more on that later)

Halloween, like the rest of our holidays, deadlines, and obligations, lurched up to us without warning.  Flashback to last year:  Kai calmly strutting through the neighborhood, proudly boasting of his Seaworld Skytower costume.  Teia zooming off into the darkness in our Tigger costumer.  Mom trying not to trip on her hula costume in hot pursuit, or Dad trying not to run into a tree while wearing the cheapest (or most economical) ghost costume in the Pacific Southwest.  At the end of a four-day Red 40/Blue 3/Yellow 5-fueled treat binge, we asked our wide-eyed little insomniacs what they would like to be NEXT Halloween.  Kai: a trolley!   Teia:  no response (she wore the Tigger suit on & off for the next 4 months, however).

Fast-forward 11.74 months:  Kai, what do you want to be for Halloween?   Kai: A trolley!   Teia:  A kitty!  No, a PINK kitty!   We suspected the kitty thing, so Uncle Mike (my brother) had dropped off some black ears for Teia during an earlier trip (Thanks Mike!  Or rather, thanks Eva, the previous owner of the kitty ears).

But black ears are NOT what pink kitty's wear, no sir/ma'am.  Pink kitty's wear pink ears.   Enter Grandma Barb, Master Sewer.  In 2 days, she sewed pink cloth over the black ears and fabricated a pink tail (complete with stuffing) and attached to some pink sweatpants.

Now to the trolley.  We should consider ourselves lucky that our little man has such unique ideas for Halloween costumes.  And if we weren't responsible for bringing them to fruition, we most definitely WOULD feel lucky.  But with 6 days to "TOT" time, I wasn't feeling quite so lucky.  In fact, I was steeling myself for the damp eyes & quavering voice of "But....I ....wanted to be....a TROLLEY!" when presented with some generic superhero mast & plastic chest shield.

Never fail, L and I whipped up some ideas.  Trolleys are essentially rectangular prisms (so says Team Umizoomie, who I blame for keeping this Trolley idea alive).  Louise printed out some different trolleys and Kai picked the MTS San Diego Trolley.  So start with a storage box, cut out a hole for the head & arms and voila!  A trolley!

Except that its brown and has shipping labels on it.  So off to Michaels we trudged (on the first rainy day in like 8 months, kinda ominous portent...).  I was never one to while away an afternoon in Michaels but Louise was locked-on and got all the goods plus 3 picture frames, 2 stocking stuffers, and an extra quart of glue on-special.  Impressive!   Back home, I painted the outside, drew up some doors & windows, cut-out the wheels and used a white paint pen to draw in the MTS symbol.  Amazing what a cup of coffee at 9pm the night before first wearing will do to get a kid's costume out the door.

Kai and Teia both got to wear their costumes at a couple outings before the big night.  The looks of pride & excitement were quite electric!   Come Halloween, the excitement was bubbling over into near-hysterics.  Teia started asking if it was dark enough BEFORE her nap (~2pm-ish).  Louise realized a good strategy to get a nap was to warn T to sleep else no Halloween.  Teia may not have slept, but she WAS quite for 2 hours!  Kid's no dummy.  As soon as I got home, the bombardment of "Time to go trick or tweating?" began.  We managed to distract our sugar-hungry hellions long enough for some kind of dinner, took some pictures, then pushed out the door for the big candy search!   While waiting, they warmed up by taking candy out of our house's container, already starting the night with a good haul!

Since we would be away from the house for 30-45 min, we left a bowl of candy at the front with a sign to "Please take 2!"   No sooner had we gone across the street for our first treats did a beat-up old sedan swoop in front of our house, out jumps a teen in a mask, scoops up all the candy in the bowl, dives into the sedan, and peels off down the street!   Probably wasted $2 in gas to snag $4 of candy.   On one hand, I was pissed that someone stole the candy.  On the other, I had to admire the brazenness of it all.   So THAT's how petty thieves do their thing - cruise around and jump on every opportunity!

Both kids could hardly slow down enough to say "Trick or Tweat" at first.  Even the usually reserved Kai was striking his little arms into the bowls to fish out the goods.   We had to help him put the candy into his pumpkin because of the costume but at first he wouldn't let go - I think he thought we were taking the candy from him for good).   Teia was also a little suspicisous- she 'allowed' Louise to carry her pumpkin but would kept vice-grips on 2-3 pieces of candy in her paws...just in case Mommy might bolt down the street, cackling with delight over stealing some candy from her own 2 kids!

After about a dozen houses, Kitty and Trolley started to run out of steam.  We trudged back to the house, re-stocked the bowl, and gave everyone one last treat for the night.   By this time, its almost 7pm, about their bedtime, and they've already had about a dozen pieces of candy each.  Now the middle term in the subject line comes to mind - 2 little kids alternating between hysterical crying, flying across the room, screaming with laughter, repeat every 5 seconds before we can shoe-horn each of them into their PJs, squirt some toothpaste into their mouths, and shoulder them into their beds.  Every nutritional rule we had kept over the last year had been broken, shattered, and ground into paste (then baked & broken again).  Who knew kids could be so susceptible to sugar rushes?   (I guess growing up, I ate so much sugar I just kept that high constant all day).

The house was now a wreck, the wails of crying still rung in our ears, but all in all it was still a good night!

Unfortunately, the sugar-crash continued for the next few days, further reinforcing our middle term above.  In fact, we may very well have crossed the line to becoming THOSE parents.   You know, the ones that don't "do" Halloween.  Its a scary thought but if we plan it right, we might be able to convince our kids that Halloween was a once in a lifetime event, like Haley's comet, then plan all future vacations in & around 31 Oct.
